The video was taken from inside our apartment, and I wasn't trying to get a shot of Meander...I was actually going for the little white dog. Still, I thought you would enjoy watching the dogs run on the beach. I fell in love with Frankie (the white Bull Terrier) a while back. He goes between your legs when you least expect it, and he's just solid. And he's lovable. The brown Lab you see (Coco) is his house buddy. They are moving to Oregon (across the country) tomorrow, and I just wanted video to remember Frankie by.

Okay, one of two things is happening here.... As I so joyfully posted a week ago, Meander was finally neutered. His stitches are internal, his meds are done and we've been keeping an eye on the areas in question as the vet asked. There is no swelling or redness and for the most part he's not trying to bite them.

So today, I noticed that instead of being a crazed puppy who's constantly at my heels, he's been napping. Or just laying down watching me. He's let me leave the room for long periods of time without running to find me. His nose is warm, but when I just took him out, he acted fine.

Jay mentioned that during their walk this morning, he actually walked like he is supposed to.

So either he's not feeling well, OR (ohdeargodletthispleasebeit,ohpleaseohpleaseohplease...) getting snipped is actually calming him down.

I'm posting because I don't want to forget this...

Meander is holding 'Polie (rhymes with Holy) Bar', one of his toys. He knows them all by name. The other night Jay and I went to bed. I was facing the windows when I heard Meander come in. He rounded my side of the bed and past the first window and stopped at the second. He hadn't seen me watching him or he would have come over for attention.

In his mouth was Polie. He gently placed him on the sill and started to sniff the breeze. Then he laid his head on Polie and just stared out, contented. I figured I'd have to put Polie back in the toy box the next morning. No. Meander picked him up, backed up to the first window, set him on the sill and sniffed the breeze. Nothing new.

Then he picked up Polie again, turned and left the room. Somehow, that was so endearing to me.

No. Meander can't come out to play. He wasn't able to keep anything down- even water for a couple of days, so we've been back to the vet. LARGE vet bill later, we're feeding him food and water by the tablespoon and praying that he doesn't throw up again. If he does, they will have to fill him with Barium, in order to see what the problem is and then maybe do surgery. So far so good, knock wood.

There is a commercial running lately. Every time this woman uses her vacumn, it sounds like a squeak toy-several different kinds of squeak toy. I couldn't tell you what the ad is about~ because I'm too busy saying Meander...there's no toy....and trying to distract him.

The Death of Baby Bed

A couple of nights ago all of this green stuffing showed up. Took us a while but we realized he had torn up his 'baby bed'. I'd sewn it back together once but this was true destruction, so we tossed it.

I went and bought another bed. Jay and I thought he would view it differently than the first, but no. He's well over sixty pounds now and fits himself in it like a baby roo in his mothers pouch.

Well, tomorrow is the big 5-MO....5 months old. We took him to the vet today for his final booster and he weighs almost 51 lbs. Vet was looking at his paws in consternation and asked us how big his parents were. Yep, he's gonna be big.

And, we almost made the entire trip without him throwing up. Then as I rounded the corner of our street- he hurled.

One problem is that he hates the truck. If I threw up every time I got in one, I'd hate it too.

He doesn't seem any the worse the wear for the attack by the Gigantic Golden. He ran back into the tennis court the next day and was ready to rumble. Thank God for small favors.

Underdog

Bad day today. There are a couple of Goldens that go into the tennis court, one of which can be rather mean, the owners told us. In fact, for a while they asked other dogs not to come in while they were there. One day, Meander and I, along with Mark and his two dogs went in with them and everyone got along great. The owner of the 'mean' dog was really worried, but everything worked out fine.

To make a long story short- with that in mind, Meander and I went in and joined them today. I let him off leash and he ran over to play. In less than 5 seconds the most Godawful, heart-rending noise went up~and it was Meander. The dog had him pinned on the ground and the owner wasn't having alot of luck getting him off quickly. I screamed and ran, the howling continuing and he finally got free. I grabbed him and he wouldn't stop howling or shaking. The woman came over and started checking him over and trying to soothe him, and he howled and shook. Nothing seemed to be physically wrong~just sheer terror. Add to that I smelled something horrible, akin to a skunk. He was so afraid his anal grands expressed.

Finally, he calmed down and I hooked him up and we left. Aside from going out again tonight~ he has slept all day, sometimes on my feet.

When rabbits howl they sound like all of the sorrows of the world. I'm here to tell you, so can puppies.

This is his new pastime. He sits on the couch and watches the waves, the dogs on the beach, people trying to park, un-manned mail carts rocking in the wind. (That one made him bark so hard he threw himself backward.) Sometimes I lay on the couch and watch him: his ears going up and down in concentration. I look at the little flip they have at the bottom. His attention is in earnest.

We are bonding. He watches everything I do now, with more understanding than he had before. He listens. We are creating our own version of communication.

And he's reached a new plateau. He sleeps in the bedroom now, but not in the crate. We close the door so he can't roam, but he has free rein of the bedroom. He tries his hardest to fit on that little bed, but only half of him does. We have another on the way. Eventually he moves to my side of the bed and sleeps on the floor under the opened window, where it's cooler. Somehow, I always know when he's there.

Soon, the crate will be history and he'll have free rein of the house. And I'm sure he'll still spend alot of his time dreaming, out of the window.

We have reached the gawky stage. The puppy breath is long gone, as is the tender face, the sweet, round body. Look at those legs. They look like a deer's. This is where, as I remember from Casey, we go from mid-growth to adulthood and I won't even notice.

He no longer wakes~bright eyed and bushy tailed. Now he's groggy. Stretching those limbs long after we've gotten outside. I miss the maddening fury of morning that I hated so much at the time. Now, even as he grows, his body needs time.

He has an endearing quality. He follows you and touches you softly with his muzzle. Your legs, sometimes your butt. I thought he was sniffing, at first. He's not. It must be a pack thing. I'm here with you. You're here with me. I hope it never changes. There's a gentleness to it that defies description.

Lessons are being learned. Intuition honed. Personality set into place. As we walk into the tennis court and Mark (another dog owner) screams his usual, 'MeanderMonster!', my brain ratchets through all the days we've done that and all of the inches added in the process.

I ache for him to grow into that constant age that Casey seemed to be in forever (the one that began when he went solidly into healthy adulthood and ended when we got the bad news), and yet I want the newness~his fascination with everything, even now, when now is what he saw and experienced yesterday.

I guess I've reached the gawky stage. When loving him goes from sheer adoration to finding love for all the new things he's becoming. Reaching yet to know what he will be.

It was time to go back to the vet for more shots. Meander is really good at the vet- aside from his normal exuberance- and he's got a huge fan base there. It's really sweet.

Regretfully, both going down and back home we discovered he's not a car dog. Threw up both ways. Now I'm going to have to take him for short trips around the neighborhood to try and get him used to it. Poor thing.

Anyway, Jay wanted to take him for a stroll through the old neighborhood....And what would be just around the corner? Petsmart! He's never been in one, so....

Look at that! 50% off! Squeak toys! Toys! Toys! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! He got two.

Today we got a Christmas card in the mail from my 81 year old Dad (trust me....he doesn't look it or act it), a man who has always had a take it or leave it attitude towards pets. I'm sure my adoration of dogs (and other critters) has left him baffled more often than not.

After all these weeks, we can see that alot of what we've been teaching him has stuck. It just depends on whether he remembers or not. He's learning that the better he behaves the more he can be out of the crate. Eventually, we won't need it at all. He's also learning not to bite as much and he licks instead. Being weaned so early, I don't know if that will ever end.

He did find a skein of yarn and destroyed it, and shoes are still his weakness....but that's not bad. Knock wood.

Dear Jolie,

My human tells me that you want a puppy because you've seen how cute I am. I think this is a good idea but I know that my human has not shown me in my best light. I am threatening to bring down that thing she calls a Christmas Tree if she doesn't tell you the truth, so here it is.

You haven't seen all of the pictures and you don't know how brilliant a puppy can be. For example, a slipper has a much stonger scent than that stupid thing they call a 'Flumpamus' does. I know...I know...slippers are what puppies do....but we do it so well.

You don't see me with my friends, the houseplants. They must love me because as much as I chew at them, they never move. In fact, they seem to give up pieces of themselves just for me!

And, my humans keep me in their bedroom at night. This is good because I'm a pack animal and need 'family' around. Knowing that, I rummage around my crate, banging and scaping....just so they know I'm there. If I need them, they must need me, right?

Everything is new to me...I wish you could see all of the things I have discovered...the stove, rock salt, scarves, rugs, coats, magazines, the ottoman, socks, remotes, cabinets, newspaper, toilet, cable wire (any wire is good...), refrigerator, table legs, grit on the floor (oh, my God- grit is great!), what they call tree needles, toilet paper, couch arms, mail ( I love mail.....), dust bunnies, cardboard....Oh ....cardboard. It is everywhere! Soda boxes, Christmas boxes, shoe boxes...heaven....

There are things I can do, but she never has the camera then. I can almost climb the sofa, if I use my teeth. I can jump down four stairs in one leap, though it makes my human grab her breastal area and scream. I can throw up at a moments notice and have several times. It's a useful skill that elicits interesting responses. I can slither past table legs, under footstools, around my crate, and over the backdoor stoop.

So, you can see my attributes are many. Get a puppy...he/she needs you. Call my human if you need to.

Yesterday he played with the wind. Like lots of the rest of the country we've been having really high winds and I took him to the wall that faces the lake. The waves were huge and the wind was incredible...blowing right in our faces. He was a canine Don Quixote....at first shaking his head, as if to shake off the wind. When that didn't work he got into play pose with his butt in the air and barked at it to come play with him. It did.

He's beginning to learn, too. We're having more bonding time together and less battles of will. This may just work out after all.

We notice that some of the training is beginning to sink in. It's strange how you go forever teaching them something with no response, and then one day he stops, seems to think for a second and then goes bounding into the kitchen in order to pee on the paper as opposed to your favorite shoes.

Also his bark is changing. Oh sure, his inside 'I want something' bark is still a shrill, mind-numbing, ear drilling, nails-on-chalkboard shriek...but outside with other dogs it's deep and commanding.

Woke up this morning to a much better pup. No having to go back to the vet. His energy is back in spades, and he's starving...as Dr. Jeff has us going slowly on the food front. He was literally throwing himself at the counter today, so by tonight I made almost a full bowl of food for him. I hope I don't kill him.

You guys have no idea how sweet Jay and I both find your comments concerning Meander. You know, I've left supportive comments for people I've never really met, but never knew how much it could warm a person until you gave back to me. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

They changed their minds at the vet and sent him home. They said he shouldn't throw up again, and yet he did on the way home. Thankfully, we had just pulled into a grocery store lot. I was busy getting ready to run into the store when Jay, who was holding Meander made this huge sound and heaved his body around suddenly. I was still asking 'what?' when he got the dogs paws on the ground just in time for more throwing up.

Right now Meander is sleeping but we're going to have to get him up for meds and a bit of food. I'm just praying the vomiting stops. Dr. Jeff says that's the thing to worry about.

Why do I have the feeling we'll be going back down there tomorrow?

One Sick Puppy

No photos today as Meander is at the vet and will be overnight. Dr. B says it might be some kind of virus puppies get just walking around.

It started yesterday morning....and by this morning our spawn of satan quietly went behind the bed to sleep.

Dr. B said he was glad we took him in early (like when the doors opened) since puppies can go downhill fast from this. Say prayers. Light candles....Kill a chicken or two. Please?

God, what a beautiful day it was today. Near 70 degrees and the trees in this neighborhood are different than in the city proper. Much more colorful. But a windy, fall day makes for crazed puppy walking. Meander chased just about all of them.

We raised Casey in the spring and summer. He would sit out in the field and watch butterflies go over his head until he fell over backwards. Fewer butterflies than leaves.

So, now that Meander has his shots he can play with other dogs. The gray pup is Hammer, who lives upstairs. Poor thing. Meander wore him out.

The black dog is Hershey and she's a strange one, but sweet. We met she and her human at the beach and she just stood and stared at the ground. Intently. I finally asked what she was doing. Watching shadows. That's all she does. We ran into them again at the tennis courts and she was....watching shadows. I swear she reminds me of the 70's...dog on acid. All that's missing is her saying, Man, I see trails.......

We took Meander to the vet today. It was so good to walk in there again. Christine, one of the assistants came out and saw me and her face lit up. Instead of greeting her, I just pointed to the corner where Jay and Meander were standing. Between her and the woman behind the desk one or two animals had to wait a few moments for attention.

For five minutes, our joy was theirs. Christine asked if we wanted Dr. Jeff. Well, yeah.

Not long after, we were ushered into a room and I flinched. It's a patients room I've seldom been in because it's small and in the past they rarely used it. But our vet has gotten popular and now they use all the rooms they have. In the above photo, I was once sitting in the chair Jay is in when I last saw Casey's thick and trusting tail leave me for the last time. Dr. Jeff led him away and Christine was there at the end.

I looked at Jay and Meander and took this photo. All I could think was, life goes on. A cycle. A circle. Grief and gratefulness.

These are photos of the day we got him, and then again today.....two weeks later. His growth is amazing and Jay is pissed he's wearing the same thing in each picture. Clothes horse.
